Boiling water to decontaminate it is millennia old. A few minutes at boiling (depending on altitude) assures that any germs are dead. The big problem with it is energy. It takes fuel or power to boil the water, energy you may sorely need for cooking or simply do not have available.
Well, our friend the Sun can come to our aid here. An extended period of time at high temperatures with some UV will also put an end to bacteria in water. Take a clear bottle (two liter soda bottles work) and position it in the sun on a car visor (ubiquitous here) or other reflective device behind it to concentrate the sun’s rays. A few hours of this and the water will be sterile. It may be dirty, but it’ll be sterile.
There are UV installed and portable systems for sterilizing water. I have little knowledge and no first-hand experience with them, so I can’t say much beyond the fact that they exist. If anyone does, I’d be very happy to learn more.
